Answer: Yes, you can use your American Express credit card in Japan wherever Amex acceptance marks are displayed.  Most BIG retailers, stores, restaurants and hotels in Japan accept credit cards, but there are many local shops that do not accept any credit cards; just cash.

American Express also issues Amex credit cards in Japan for Japanese people.  It is the 4th biggest credit card merchant in Japan after JCB, Visa and Mastercard.

Most major cities in Japan like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Sendai, Sapporo, Okinawa, Fukuoka accepts American Express.  Smaller shops in smaller cities are LESS LIKELY to accept credit cards.
